ABOUT THE TEAM
1 Product Owner
1 UX/UI Designer (me)
1 Systems Engineer
8 Software Engineers
1 QA engineer
I am the Lead UX/UI Designer for Digital Portfolio System, a custom enterprise web application designed to be a one-stop-shop project portfolio planning solution for my Fortune 500 client. My team was tasked with building a tool that allowed the client a more simple and elegant way of knowing and understanding what projects to invest their resources into. The solution is designed to facilitate the way the client’s Technology Integration Portfolio Management Organization operates without requiring excessive duplication of data that is maintained in other project management and finance systems that already exist within the company. This application is in production and currently serves 7,000+ global employees.
KEY CONTRIBUTIONS
style GUIDE
Developed a UI Style Guide to enforce consistency within the application. This style guide was a flexible, living document which included color palette, typography, buttons, drop-downs, notifications, tooltips, alerts, images, and more.
Designer to Developer Handoff
Introduced Figma to the team as a way to ease the transition from design to development. Emphasized the need for designer-developer collaboration in order to make handoffs more successful.
VISUAL STORYTELLING
Introduced data visualization to the application as a way to improve ease of use as well as to keep users engaged. Created chart views as an option for users, in addition to existing table view.
ADVOCATING FOR THE USER
When I first joined the Digital Portfolio System project, the initial design that was handed to me was dictated primarily by client stakeholders and the Software Developers building the tool. There was virtually no user involvement in this design that I inherited, so my first priority as the Lead Designer was to define our users and seek to understand their needs, priorities, motivations, and pain-points. Throughout this project, every day was a good day to remind my team the importance of always keeping users at the center of our designs; understanding them, prioritizing their needs, and engaging them every step of the way as the foundation of the design thinking process.
usabILITY TESTING
Introduced Usability Testing to my team and the company as a whole. Conducted my own usability tests with real users on a biweekly basis to ensure my design decisions were informed by data.

reflections
advocating for design in a development-first organization. As the first full-time designer at Collinear Group, It was all on me to educate the company on the importance of always keeping users at the center of our designs. I have to constantly remind my coworkers that designers are not just here to “make things pretty,” and that design is absolutely a science, not just an art.
UX-ing happens off screen too. This project was a great reminder that our work as ux designers does not always stard and end with the screen. my work with dps included helping users tighten up their offline workflows and processes.
